The use of muffles in laboratories, are furnaces capable of heating at high temperatures, ceramic materials, drying and incinerating substances and products. To do this, muffles are used, a type of oven intended to reach temperatures above 200ºC. It has structures made of plates, with thermal and insulating materials. Inside, only refractory materials, such as a porcelain crucible, can be used due to the high temperatures it can reach.
The muffles are designed to meet a wide variety of applications in different areas, such as laboratories, control processes, heat treatments, precipitate drying, precipitate calcination and casting.
Applications and Uses
Muffles are composed of certain elements, which are necessary for their operation. Among them are, the internal cabinet, backdoor, external cabinet, temperature controllers and control panel.
The muffles are designed to meet a wide variety of applications in different areas such as:
- Laboratory work: It is used for a large number of techniques and is a very temperature sensitive equipment with great thermal insulation, which allows it to preserve constant temperatures, without leakage or heat propagation. It reaches a maximum temperature of 1,100°C.
- Control processes: This equipment has better temperature accuracy and a greater set of techniques in its controls, with customizable programs and digital control.
- Heat treatments: It is designed to perform metal tempering and tempering processes, through an efficient temperature control that achieves the desired temperature quickly with a minimum overpass of this. Its maximum temperature is 1,200°C.
- Precipitate calcination: It is used for processes in which you want to bring temperatures to the maximum, reaching 1,700°C.
- Casting tests: It is ideal for working with noble gases or environments controlled by the exchange of gases inside, which allows you to simulate working conditions for quality controls. Its maximum temperature is 1,200°C.
Classification of The Muffles
A muffle reaches high temperatures, but its heat source is completely separated from the cooking chamber, as the laboratory sample avoids being contaminated with gases derived from combustion.
There are two types of muffles, which perfectly cover the need they are:
- Electric muffles: it is the unit used in the laboratory, to heat solid samples, generate physical and chemical reactions as a result of the increase in temperature. In addition, it allows to perform before high temperature accuracies of 1700 ° C, with insulated system of low thermal load, its electrical thermal power is greater than 78%, and heats before a three-dimensional space in a fast, homogeneous and effective way.
- Fuel muffles: it is an oven for high temperatures, where the source of heat is completely away from the cooking chamber, so that it does not contaminate the samples with the combustion gases. In addition, it reaches temperatures greater than 1700°C and is used when temperatures of more than 1200°C are required. The fuel you use is propane gas or natural gas. These muffles are mostly used for heat treatment.
There are many laboratory operations that require the application of high temperatures; even more so to be able to use them in a homogeneous and controlled way, to certify the results of the study. So it is advisable to use this equipment and avoid exposing the samples to contamination. Not to mention, it would imply a greater risk to the safety of the one who is treating the sample. The muffle turns out to be the ideal instrument to work at high temperatures with samples in the laboratory, reducing the risk for the operator without compromising its efficiency or operation.
